Producing an Alt-Pop Song from a Simple Demo

The Artist

I had the pleasure of joining forces with Peech Trees in the early stages of their music career. They came to me with a song idea for their very first release, and trusted me to help develop their idea all the way through to the final mastering.

The Challenge

The demo was made in Garageband on the artists iPhone, the fundamental chord sequence and vocal melodies were there but it didn't sound like the professional production they were after. What was missing?

• No bassline

• Drum samples didn't have any impact

• Some keyboard melodies didn't fit the mood

• Needed more interest throughout

The groove and hook was there, we just needed to have everything working towards presenting the heart of the song in the best possible way.

My Approach

As there was no bassline and the drums needed finesse, I thought it was best to get that rhythm section really locked in and grooving as a basis for the rest of the production to fit around. This involved replacing drums samples and nudging them off grid to give a more natural feel, writing and recording a bass guitar part that helps emphasise the beat.

We rewrote some of the keyboard melodies to have a darker, moodier feels to match the lyrical content. We also looked at different synthesiser sounds and layering to create a larger sound while maintaining the 'washy' nature of the original demo.

Abstract guitar sounds and reversed elements were added to introduce interest as the track builds, while vocal harmonies were recorded throughout to provide texture, depth and emotional impact at the right moments in the song.

The Result

The finished production managed to maintain the original feel of the demo, while enhancing the groove, depth and professionalism of the sound. The track was ready for release after a few rounds of mix revisions and Peech Trees was super stoked with the result.
